Following on from the success of our Winter Event and Annual Dinner, the Scottish Competition Law Forum would like to welcome you to attend its Spring event: Government Intervention in Markets - Healthcare Perspectives.
The Event will take place at 5pm in Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP’s Edinburgh offices, 1 Exchange Crescent, Conference Square on 23 March 2010.
Our main speakers for the event will be:
Professor Johan van de Gronden: Chair of European Law at the University of Nijmegen, who has written extensively on the impact of EU free movement and competition law on the healthcare sector.
Declan Purcell: Member of the Irish Competition Authority and Director of its Advocacy Division. The ICA has been very active in the field of healthcare, particularly as regards competition in the supply of services by health professionals.
Catherine Davies: Legal Director of the Co-operation and Competition Panel for NHS-funded Services. the Panel’s role includes advising on the wider development of co-operation, patient choice and competition within the NHS in England & Wales.

The Scottish Competition Law Forum is delighted to invite you to its third anniversary meeting in Edinburgh on Wednesday 3 December 2008.
The evening will be an occasion for the members of the Forum to reflect on the third successful year of the Forum and to look ahead to the 2009 events. It is also an opportunity to introduce new faces to the Forum and we would encourage you to extend this invitation to any contacts who may be interested.
The evening is being held at the Sheraton Hotel, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, and at Santini’s Restaurant at Conference Square in Edinburgh. We will start proceedings with a drinks reception at which we will reflect on the past year’s successes and outline our plans for 2009.
We are delighted to welcome Sir Gerald Barling as our keynote speaker. Sir Gerald is a High Court judge and current President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. He was appointed a Recorder in 1993, and was knighted on his appointment as President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal in November 2007.
Terry Calvani will deliver the after dinner speech. Terry served as a Commissioner of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission during the Reagan administration. He was also a member of the Competition Authority of Ireland. Terry has lectured and written widely on many aspects of competition law and is currently with Freshfields in the USA.

Our autumn event, hosted by KPMG LLP, will consider competition’s increased role in the regulated utilities, the manner in which competition is being developed in these utilities and the impact these changes may have on utilities and consumers.
We will hear from both regulators and those with experience of working in regulated utilities, which will give us a fascinating insight into the process of developing competition in regulated utilities and the practical consequences of the introduction of competition.
The event will take place at the Radisson Hotel, Meeting room 11 (1st floor), 301 Argyle Street, Glasgow, G2 8DL.

Followed by presentations from:
- Rhodri Thompson QC (Counsel to Albion Water acting in the CAT and Court Appeal)
- John Grady (Advocate, Hastie Stable, and formerly in-house legal counsel at Scottish Power)
- Professor George Yarrow (Non-executive member of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority and Director of the Regulatory Policy Institute)
The formal part of the evening will then be concluded by a panel discussion with ample opportunity for questions from the floor.

Competition in the professions is the subject of considerable debate and development at European and national levels. The summer SCLF event, hosted by the Faculty of Advocates, will give an opportunity to examine, across a range of professions, issues such as:
- Competing considerations of safeguarding ethics and introducing liberalisation; and
- The role and limits of self regulation.
With speakers from law, medicine and accountancy, and from the European Commission, we will have a full agenda for discussion which will also be relevant to many other sectors.
